Families celebrate 5 years at Intervention – get ready to Intervene and Inspire for another 50+!

Thank you everyone for a wonderful weekend. I am writing up a thank you post with pictures but I wanted to share with you a very special message that I just received.

When my husband and I started Intervention in 2010, we made a commitment to support families of all types. We stepped forward with our personal money and we are honored and grateful that you all stepped forward as well. We are a true labor of love and our impact reverberates far beyond the 1 weekend that we come together.

Webcomic artist Monica Marier just summed up exactly why we work so hard for everyone beneath our roof:

“Something amazing happened today. I brought my daughter to Intervention today and she made an LIFE-CHANGING discovery.

Since she started school, this kid had been told that she was weird, and wrong, and an outcast because she was a girl who liked things like skeletons, and steampunk, and Dr. Who, instead of American Girl Dolls and Horses.

Today she saw and met a ton of women and girls who liked all those “geek” things that she liked and that they were proud of it. And sherealized:

She was a part of something. And she was among people who thought that she was wonderful. IT’S SO GREAT that her first great con adventure was in such a safe, warm, friendly convention like Intervention and it was everything I hoped it would be and MORE. She’s already bouncing up and down in anticipation of ReGeneration Who.

THANKS SO MUCH, to Oni Hartstein, James Harknell , Pete Abrams and all the staff and artists that made this a truly fantastic weekend.

You guys put this smile here.”

An Interview with Christian Beranek of The Webcomic Factory

Intervention 5 is artist and writer Christian Beranek’s first year attending our event. Her resume is nothing short of amazing, ranging from co-founding the expansive Webcomic Factory to helping create background content for movies such as Max Payne and Se7en.

What is your contribution to The Webcomic Factory?

I do a comic called Validation, a story about a trans girl trying to lead a fulfilling day-to-day life and who is also into geeky stuff like comics and conventions. Also, Tony and I collaborated on Post-Apocalyptic Nick, which is about a slacker who wakes up and has the world’s last working iPhone.

How did you get involved with your movie projects like Se7en and Max Payne?

I lived in L.A. for 6 years and worked with a bunch of comic companies. Zenescope got the rights for Se7en from New Line Cinema and I was able to pitch them a few story ideas that they were able to use.

For Max Payne, I was working with a company called Splastik, which is a company that does motion comics. They also help to do DVD bonus features, so I helped create a motion comic prequel to the movie that you can watch on the Max Payne Blu-ray.

What attracted you to Intervention Con?

As a webcomic creator, I just had to do the show at least once. Tony DiGerolamo, who has been here before, told me that I needed to check it out. Plus, this is my birthday weekend and I wanted something fun to do. And I love being around like-minded folks and talking comics and everything.

You Can Test a Brand New Card Game & Get Credited for It!

Every card game from Magic: The Gathering to Munchkin couldn’t have entered the gaming world without abundant testing. Now, you personally have the opportunity to test out a brand new card game before it even comes out–and get credited for it!

Nestled inside the board game room, you will find Dan Palmer and Martin Brandt’s upcoming card game “Dead Future,” based on their webcomic of the same name. Palmer explained that they will be welcoming testers for the game throughout the weekend and, if they provide their name on an accompanying survey, will be given credit once the game is released.

“It’s an apocalyptic battle royale for 2 players,” Palmer said, when asked to describe it.

Palmer went on to say that there are already plans for future expansions, including a possible board game. Not only will expansions be able to fold into the original game (thus reducing the cost to gamers), but they also will have the ability to change the entire direction or plot of Dead Future entirely.

Dead Future plans to hold a Kickstarter in January and is hoping for a Spring 2015 rollout. Check out Raven Warren Studios’ website for more information.

Intervention 5 Is Now Underway

Welcome to another amazing year of Intervention, everyone! It’s hard to believe that this is our fifth year doing this!

As always, we will be live-blogging the entire convention, providing you with updates, interviews, and all that fun stuff throughout the weekend. With the con doors now open, here is just a sampling of the many, many offerings that you should check out.

Sluggy Freelance: The Panel (6PM Friday, Large Panels Room)

Longtime Intervention friend Pete Abrams will be talking about his long-running webcomic, Sluggy Freelance, which was one of the first regularly-updated webcomics available to read. Almost 20 years later, it is still going strong.

David Pescovitz: Ask Me Anything (3PM Saturday, Large Panels Room)

We are very honored to have David Pescovitz from BoingBoing here this year. As the c-marketing manager of one of the longest-running blogs and information sources on the Web, he comes to us with a wealth of information on anything and everything from blogging.

(Re)Generation Who Presents: Doctor Who Premiere Party (8PM Saturday, Large Panels Room)

Whovians all over the world have been waiting for this weekend for months now. Join us for what is sure to be a crowded premiere of the new season of Doctor Who. Let’s see how Peter Scapaldi does in his turn as the 12th Doctor.

Intervention Talent Show (Ages 18+) (9PM Saturday, Panels Room 2)

There are no rules or regulations in this 18+, late-night staple of our gathering. If you can sing, perform stand-up comedy, or can showcase any other sort of talent, bring it to us and be judged! We’ll be hosting it as a Gong Style program this year.

As always, the entire weekend will be filled with engaging, informative, and of course interactive panels, our fabulous video game room, an opportunity to share your artwork on our wall (or even have it critiqued), and several LARPing games going on.

We look forward to seeing you here!
